The Building Engineering Services Association (BESA) TR19 regulations were originally introduced in 2005, but in the most recent update of the regulation (2019) it is now a legal requirement to use accredited service provide to be TR19 Compliant. The regulations have been put in place to promote a safer working environment, reduce fire risks, airflow efficiency and helps pass health and safety inspections
How Do I Meet TR19 Regulations?
To meet the standards set by BESA you need to comply with their latest criteria, The criteria includes 4 main sections:
Access:
The Ductwork installed should be designed with easy access for cleaning in mind.
Access panels should be made of the same material as the ductwork.
Access panels should be located at the top or side of the ductwork.
Commercial Duct Cleaning:
There are a variety of ductwork cleaning methods that can be used, these include hand wiping, scraping, chemical cleaning, steam cleaning, and mechanical brushing.
The frequency of cleaning depends on the type of building, its use, and the level of contamination buildup.
Inspection:
To meet the regulations, you are required to get your ductwork inspected regularly, ensuring it is clean and meets the standards.
Inspections should be carried out periodically and not exceeding 12-month intervals
Certification:
Certification procedures are recommended to ensure that your ventilation system meets the required cleanliness standards set by BESA. You need to keep detailed records of all inspections, cleanings and certifications.

How often you should get your kitchen extract cleaned is mainly down to the frequency and type of use your kitchen falls under. For Example, Heavy use is classed as 12-16 hours a day resulting in 3 month cleaning periods. However, if you only use your kitchen for a short period of time, but you are working with high level of grease, you could still fall into the heavy use category. To find out what category you fall into, give us a call.
The regulations for your kitchen extract systems are:
Building insurances - Most insurers will require a certification of compliance to provide cover
Environment Health Organisation Regulations state that every commercial kitchen must carry out periodic extraction cleaning as per the level of contaminants in the system.
Responsible person - the person in charge of the business is responsible for the quality of the working environment.
To find out what requirements you must meet, get in touch with us today!
As good practice it is recommended to have a third party company carry out a deep clean of your kitchen annually, the Environmental Health Organisation can request this if your kitchen is not kept up to a high standard. Kitchen Extraction Cleaning is a legal requirement of any commercial kitchen, this ensures the kitchens keep to a safe and healthy working environment. The TR19 regulations states that systems with over 500 microns of grease present require immediate attention, but levels of 200 microns and above need cleaning. Without regular cleaning and maintenance, you increase the potential risks of fires breaking out.
